What is a membrane filter press?

The membrane filter press, normally refers to a chamber membrane filter press. It is a professional solid liquid separation device for industrial usages. It realize filtration by forcing material/slurry through a filter cloth. A membrane filter press takes this concept a step further than a chamber filter press. It consists of a series of recessed chamber plates and membrane filter plates together. The key difference lies in the integration of membrane plates strategically placed within the filter pack. These membrane plates can be inflated with high pressure air or high pressure water after the initial filtration phase, then the high pressure medium will squeeze the filter cakes, to reduce more moisture to get better dewatering performance.

The odd number is mainly used to ensure the symmetry and ensure has volume to store solids. As we know, membrane filter plates' surface is flat without deepth, this means no volume to store the solids. So it need works with chamber filter plates at both sides to form filter cakes. Addionally, the tail plate and head plate are chamber filter plates, so the middle plate quantity of a membrane filter press has a odd number. 

For a membrane filter plate, it's hollow. While squeezeing, it will be filled compressed air or high pressure water? What is the best choise? Actually this answer is very easier. If the membrane filter press model is smaller, the high pressure air is 1st choice; for the bigger model, say 1500 series membrane filter press, the high pressure water will be cost saving. Of course, it also relates to your industry.

How a Membrane Filter Press Works?

1. Closing: The filter plates are pressed together by the hydraulic system and form a sealed filtering chamber.
2. Feeding: Slurry is pumped into the chambers under pressure. The liquid passes through the filter cloths, leaving the solids captured inside the filtering chambers. 
3. Filtration: Solids deposit on the filter cloths, forming the filter cakes.
4. Membrane Squeezing (Key Step): After the initial filtration phase, compressed air or high-pressure water will be pumped into the membrane plates. The inflating membranes exert higher pressure on the filter cakes, squeezing out more liquid.
5. Opening: The filter plates are opened, and the solid filter cakes are discharged.
